The Dailymotion player allows you to configure different behaviors depending on your needs, including different parameters for the autoplay.

However, the player doesn't have a complete control on the autoplay as each internet browser has implemented different set of rules which can have an impact on the player initialization.

In this article, you'll learn how our player behaves based on these constrains, and the different autoplay policies implemented by the main internet browsers.

Our autostart behavior

In order to deliver the best experience for your viewers, here are the rules we're trying to follow when the autostart has been enabled:

First, we try to start the Player, with the sound activated. To ensure a seamless transition, the Player shows the first frame of the video while it's loading.
If we're not allowed by the browser, we'll try to start the Player with the sound disabled
If we're not allowed by the browser, the Player will only start through a user interaction. In this case, the video's thumbnail is displayed on the Player.

Please note, in most environments, after a video is played, the next one can automatically start without any need of further user interaction.

Autostart integration & Mute parameter

Unless you want to have the player muted, we invite you to only use the autostart parameter and let the player initiate with the sound activated. If it's not possible, we will automatically disable the sound for you, which ease your player integration.

Browser policies

Chrome

Autoplay with sound activated

Chrome will allow it based on the Media Engagement Index (MEI) score assigned to the domain.

The MEI is a measurement of the individual's media consumption per origin. Therefore, your MEI score will be highest on sites where you regularly play media. You can check your media engagement index score here: chrome://media-engagement/

Autoplay with sound disabled

By default, Chrome should let the muted players start automatically.

Firefox

Firefox prevents all video with sound from autoplay by default.

If you want to change these settings, Firefox offers a number of easy methods to quickly reconfigure the autoplay parameters.

Disable it, in the advanced settings of the web browser. Preferences > Privacy & Security.
Toggle the site permissions, by clicking the info button, in the address bar.
Navigate to the advanced settings using about:config in the search bar, change the option to media.autoplay.enabled to [true] or [false].

Safari

Starting from Safari 11, users are able to switch between different Autoplay configurations from Safari settings (Preferences > Websites > Auto-Play).

Autoplay with sound activated

Safari blocks nearly all auto-playing media with sound by default, except for the larger sites like Facebook...

In order to allow auto-playing on other sites, it's possible to simply change the auto-play configuration, head to that site and click 'Settings for This Website', in the Safari tab from the menu bar.

In the pop-up window, you can toggle between different auto-play parameters:

[Allow all Auto-Play]
[Stop Media with Sound]
[Never Autoplay]

This allows videos on this domain to play, but not for other websites using videos from this domain.

For example, if you had Dailymotion.com configured to autoplay, it doesn't allow for Dailymotion videos on your site autoplay, It is domain-specific.
