The Dailymotion video Player is accessible to people using keyboards and assistive technologies.
This means that people with permanent or temporary disabilities can use all the features of our video player without needing to use a mouse or trackpad.
Use a keyboard to control the player
The video Player has been built for complete keyboard access: every single control can be navigated to and activated with basic keyboard actions.
Screenshot of the video player with keyboard focus on the Play button. Keyboard focus on the button is visible via a colored outline.
Navigate through the player controls
- To move forward, use the TAB key on your keyboard to navigate through interactive elements.
- To move backward, hold the SHIFT key on your keyboard then use the TAB key to navigate through interactive elements.
Player focus
Depending on where the player is on the page, keyboard focus will likely start somewhere else on the page.
When keyboard focus gets inside the video player, it will be shown with an outline around the currently focused control, so that you can see exactly where you are inside the player.
Please note, the visual style of the focus indicator may differ between browsers and platforms.
Activate the controls
- Navigate to the control you want to use, as described above.
- Use the ENTER key on your keyboard to activate the control.
This has the same effect as clicking the control with a mouse. - You can also use the SPACE key to activate buttons (but not links).
Using sliders
- Navigate to the slider, as described above (e.g. progress bar).
- Use the UP or RIGHT arrow key on your keyboard to increase the slider value.
- Use the DOWN or LEFT arrow key to decrease the slider value.
Changes should be visible immediately (e.g. when increasing the progress bar value, the video playback position should skip forwards).
Using popups
Navigate forwards or backwards through interactive items as described above.
As you navigate through the popup, keyboard focus will cycle through interactive items until you close it:
- If keyboard focus is on the last item and you move forward, keyboard focus will be moved to the very first interactive item in the popup.
- If keyboard focus is on the first item and you move backwards, keyboard focus will be moved to the very last interactive item in the popup.
To close the popup:
- use the ESC key on your keyboard,
- navigate to and activate the “close” button as described above (the “close” button is shown as a X at the top right of the popup).
Using menus
As well as the TAB and SHIFT+TAB navigation described above, you can also use the arrow keys to navigate within the menu
When the menu is open:
- use the DOWN arrow key on your keyboard to move downwards through the menu items.
- Use the UP arrow key on your keyboard to move upwards through the menu items.
As you navigate through the menu, keyboard focus will cycle through interactive items until you close it:
- If keyboard focus is on the last item and you move forward, keyboard focus will be moved to the very first interactive item in the menu.
- If keyboard focus is on the first item and you move backwards, keyboard focus will be moved to the very last interactive item in the menu.
To close the menu:
- use the ESC key on your keyboard,

Use keyboard shortcuts to control the player
We also provide keyboard shortcuts that can make certain actions quicker and easier to do. These shortcuts enhance our standard keyboard access described above, and you can choose to use one or both methods of keyboard control.
You can turn keyboard shortcuts on or off via the Accessibility section of the Settings menu. By default, keyboard shortcuts are on.
Note: this setting only applies to keyboard shortcuts. Standard keyboard access as described in the previous section will continue to work.
All keyboard shortcuts to control our Player are listed below, and appear within the Player when you press the key.
Please note that the keyboards shortcut works only when the focus is inside the Player: after clicking inside the player or moved keyboard focus to the Player.
